Industrial Burner Troubleshooting

Why Does an Industrial Burner Keep Locking Out?

Repeated burner lockouts are usually a symptom of a fault that needs systematic diagnosis rather than repeated resetting.

What is a burner lockout?

A lockout is a safety condition in which the burner control system stops the firing sequence because an expected operating condition was not achieved. Depending on the burner and control system, the cause may involve ignition, flame detection, fuel supply, air supply, pressure, interlocks or the burner management system.

Common causes

  • Ignition problems such as worn electrodes, ignition transformers or incorrect settings.
  • Flame detection problems involving the flame sensor, wiring or scanner.
  • Incorrect or unstable gas or oil supply pressure.
  • Blocked filters, strainers, nozzles or fuel-train components.
  • Combustion-air or fan problems, including restricted airflow.
  • Faulty safety interlocks, pressure switches or control signals.
  • Incorrect burner setup, combustion adjustment or commissioning.

What should a technician check?

A proper diagnosis starts with the burner fault code and operating sequence. The technician can then inspect the fuel train, ignition and flame supervision, combustion air, safety interlocks and relevant control components. Measurements should be taken against the burner manufacturer's requirements and the site's applicable procedures.

Do not keep resetting the burner

Repeatedly resetting a burner without identifying the underlying fault can hide an intermittent problem and may create an unsafe operating condition. If a burner is repeatedly locking out, arrange a qualified inspection.

What to send Burner Pro

When requesting assistance, provide the burner make and model, fuel type, equipment being fired, fault code or lockout indication, recent symptoms and site location. A photo of the burner nameplate and control display can also help with initial triage.
